Clementine Still Life II, Full Movie

View clip (without comments)
This is the first full movie I'm going to post. I hope everything will work (download/paypal etc), bare with me and let me know if it doesn't ... (josvanr A T gmail.com)
The movie contains more than 15 hours of painting. You can see the entire process of evolving the painting from start to end, with nothing left out. Also you can see what I'm doing on my palette as shown in the image. There is no sound in the movie (keep file as small as possible) but I added subtitles containting English comments on what I'm doing. I had use a fair amount of compression to make this possible, so some parts of the movie will look blocky, but the detailed parts will look fine and I feel this was the best way. So one way I imagine you use the file is to open it in your movie player and then fast forward until you see something interesting, or until you see a comment appearing at the bottom. Then just resume normal play. (Or watch the entire 15 hours of course.)
Note: the movie format is AVI/MPEG4. Playable on Win/Mac/linux with VLC Player.
The movie is available for 7.5 Euro. Payment via paypal or credit card. Just click the 'buy now' button below and follow the instructions. The amount will be automatically converted to your currency. You will receive the download link in your mail a few minutes after the payment is completed.. The file size is 1.4 Gb, so downloading may take some time, depending on how fast your connection is.

If you have any difficulties contact me on josvanr (at) gmail [dot] com
I'll be happy to answer any questions that arise from the movie. Please post them here...

  1. This is great. It helps a lot understanding of the overall process especially with the comments and palet view.

The framerate is quite low so it is a bit challenging to realy see the brush technique. I would be interested in a movie of a simple scene, like a single egg, apple or cherry at normal framerate and perhaps a bit more closeup.

Anyway, thanks for putting this up and let us learn from it for such a reasonable price!

  2. thnx .. FIRST COMMENT !!!

Yes, for a 15h painting I needed to compress a lot and throw away frames in order to get a managable file size (Still I'm waiting for my provider's message due to 'fair use policy' for data amount..) Anyway, with a shorter painting time yes this is possible. Hope to do this some time soon....

  3. That would be a great add. And yes 1.4 GB per download may raise concerns with your isp...

Anyway, I followed your advice and used artist quality paint on Masonite primed with gesso I got better results. I think I sanded the gesso too smooth prebiously making the paint extremely slippery. I made reference pictures of a 'simple' apple lit using standard studio lighting. I help identifying key colors using Photoshop. It may sound like cheating, but it is a really nice way to identify exact colors and the areas they cover (using the magic wand tool). I then made a referene picture with swatches of these 6 or so colors and mixed my paint accordingly. The painting itself was a bit like thso called Carder method where you work from dark to light and keep the blending to the end.

Still, putting highlights right on top of the wet paint remains challenging. I did not use medium in the first layer, but added medium to the highlights and was then able to lay it on top without mixing it with the first layer. I think this is where reology comes in, the science of flowing liquids...

I plan to do one small, postcard like painting per weekend to go through the learning curve. Thanks again for sharing your inspirational work!

  4. Nice to hear from you !... Ok yes, some texture helps to prevent the paint from moving when you put more touches on top wet into wet. Also, blending is easier then. Canvas is too course for me, but lately I've been using 'grey' cardboard to paint on. This has a slight texture.

Yes, I also sometimes use Gimp's 'posterize' function if I get confused about tones. Discretizing the tones / colors can help, because I think the visual system has some particular ways in dealing with smooth gradients (many optical illusions based on that), making it difficult to estimate the tone/color. Drawback is that, although the photograph is quite good, in my experience there are always small differences compared to what we see in reality. Reflections that seem a bit stronger in reality, or whatever. But it's a good learning tool......

Ok, 'happy painting' and keep me posted.....

  5. Hello. I purchased the download yesterday and also downloaded the VLC player. I was only able to play the first seven minutes of the download (up until you begin to wet the cardboard after mixing colors). then the video appears to run out. It stops and if I try to resume playing it simply starts over. I wonder whether I was able to get the entire download? If not, how do I go back to the download and try again since my order has already been processed through PayPal. I'm eager to see the rest of the download and have followed your daily paintings for over a year now. Keep it up! Laurel

  6. Thanks for sharing. Now if I can just learn this method. At least I am inspired. I tried one of your eggs, and it went not too bad. Your method of sharing is both inspirational and compelling.

I had no trouble downloading, paypal is flawless, and the video plays very well on RealPlayer.

  8. Jos, wonderful job on this video. I've scanned through it and can see there is a lot of information that will be helpful to me. Though I don't have the patience for photo realism, there is plenty to be learned and used in my own style of painting. Thanks.

Will have to look at getting the other videos.

    1. I'm using very cheap chinese bristles (brandless) from Xenos. The painting was done in 3 days, but I kept it in the fridge at night to keep the paint wet....
