ClementinesBottle Tutorial Video

(Watch the short time lapse movie.)
I got several requests to make a tutorial demo for this painting, so here it is ! The clementines just are a nice, colorful subject to paint I guess. (And they stay fresh for a long time.) Features in this movie:

  • Comments on how to paint DUST on objects
  • Tricks to achieve a sense of LIGHT and DEPTH in a painting
  • Comments on specific paint mixtures used, for each area in the painting
  • Using different mediums for initial couch and for painting in later stages
  • No sound but english comments in subtitles
  • 11 1/2 hour Full painting from start to end, no brush stroke left out.

Price: 10 Euro, payment via PayPal / Credit Card
You will receive the download link in your mail a few minutes after the payment is completed.

ClementinesBottle Movie format: Avi/Mpeg4. Size: 2GB, 11.5 hours. Playable on Win/Mac/linux with VLC Player. For problems/questions: please leave your comments on the blog or contact me at josvanr (at) gmail.com

Setup

I don't have a picture of the setup in the movie, so I'm adding it here.
The painting is placed more or less directly next to the setup, for easy comparing. The painting is illuminated by 6 solux bulbs (not visible here). The setup on the right is illuminated by fluorescent tubes in the ceiling (Philips tld 90 de luxe, 3x 5550k, 1x 3500k.) I use curtains to partly put the setup in the shadow, for creating more depth and drama in the painting...

  1. Hi Jos, I was wondering whether you are planning to make available a full movie on painting a portrait - such as the full version of your portrait youtube demo :-)

  2. Hi Jos..your profile doesn't say much about you. However, in one of your videos you've commented that you havn't learnt painting at any art school..
Would love to know more about your art story.

  4. Hi Jos,
At what stage in the painting do you use the slow-dry medium? Do you mix it into your paints or do you just dip your brush in the medium when you need a more fluent brushstroke?

  5. Hello, this one was painted in 1 layer, so I used a slow medium in all sessions. I have experimented with mixing the medium with a big pile of paint, especially for the quick drying pigments like transparent oxide red. But I haven't systematically applied this. Usually I only mix in some medium as I go along during the painting session...

  6. Hello Jos, I have been admiring your paintings for years, and enjoy your youtube videos. I recently downloaded the full length tangerines and bottle, and I am so happy I did! What a treat to watch the full length, it really shows how much thought and focus and time you spend on each and every little detail. You are such a talented and generous artist, I'm so thankful that I can see and enjoy your work through the internet.

  7. Hey, I recently finished the full length tutorial for this painting and I'd like to say that your patience and attention to detail are both humbling and inspiring. I have a few quick questions about brushes for you. First, how many brushes would you say you use on average and how often do you clean them during a painting, Also, is there a brand of brushes that you would suggest I buy? I'm currently using brushes handed down to me from my great uncle and they are much older than I am. Every time I buy a new brush it doesn't seem to last very long or perform very consistently. Either they don't make them like they used to or I'm looking at the wrong brands/types of brushes, I'd like to start adding some new brushes to my collection that are reliable.

    1. hello Lemon, thnx ! Hmm I use a lot of brushes during a painting session, maybe .. 20? I use different types (hog, synthetic, mongoose) different sizes and sometimes I use 2 or 3 each with a different color; so I dont have to clean them when switching to a different color. But eventually .. you usually have to clean them for switching colors. A good brand that has several types of brushes is Rosemary's. I use their chunking bristles and also the mongoose brushes....

  8. It would make sense to make videos with audio, because the audio part is way smaller than video, so there's no use saving some megabites: you can just speak in the process, so you won't need subtitles. Thanks for sharing your art!

    1. Yes you are right about the sizes. But I'm not going to be able to talk for 10 hours hahaha. And with the subtitles, you can fast forward until you see a remakr. But yes meaybe some day I'll thy this...
